Are you thinking of buying an outdoor product that needs to be fitted on a power supply, but don’t have an electrical outlet for it? Worry not, for here is a guide to help you install outdoor electrical outlet. It is pretty easy to install outdoor electrical outlet on your own, but precautions must always be taken while working with electricity since a simple carelessness can risk your life.
Selecting a place for an electrical outlet:
You need a power source external to the house to install outdoor electrical outlet. This can be done using an exterior fixture or by using a power supply that is inside the house. Choose an interior outlet where the wall can be drilled and the outlet can be changed to an exterior one.
Precautions to be taken:
Always switch off the power on your main power supply board, and paste a note stating that the power shouldn’t be turned on for a while.
Next, use a tester to make sure that there is no power running in the selected internal outlet.
Working on the internal outlet:
Once you are sure, unscrew the panel using a screwdriver and remove the outlet from the wall.
Then use the screwdriver again to unscrew the wires from the outlet.
Push the wires out of the way and push one of the holes in the electrical box with the help of a screwdriver.
Use a drill on the hole, and work on it till the hole pushes through the other side of the wall.
Installing the outdoor electrical outlet:
Place the electrical box over the hole on the outside and mark around it using a pencil.
Then drill the portion out.
Push one of the holes in the electrical box and fix it on the wall.
Push a Romex cable from the inside of the house to the outside.
Remove the sheathing and screw the wires on both the external outlet and internal outlet.
Screw the outlets back to the walls and test it.
